Travel Dates

June 8 to June 28 (During Summer I: May 29-June 30)

Destinations

  • USA: New York City (optional)
  • Germany: Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin

Eligibility

All TTU students are encouraged to enroll. The course is particularly beneficial for those pursuing art in any discipline, architecture, interior or apparel design, history, or language-focused majors. Students from other institutions need to verify their eligibility with the Study Abroad Program.

Program Overview

This course offers an ideal study-abroad experience, providing a unique opportunity to explore the Bauhaus's revolutionary impact through on-site experiences. It also helps students develop communication strategies relevant to the digital humanities. Students will journey to the three pivotal cities where the Bauhaus developed its groundbreaking interdisciplinary and trans-medial approach to the arts.

Destinations

Weimar

Weimar is the birthplace of the Bauhaus, and its sites still feel alive with creative energy. Students can explore:

  • Bauhaus Museum Weimar
  • Haus am Horn
  • Museum Neues Weimar
  • Weimar University

Dessau

Dessau showcases the Bauhaus's most iconic landmarks, including:

  • Bauhaus School Building
  • Masters' Houses
  • Bauhaus Museum Dessau
  • Dessau-T顤ten housing state

Berlin

Berlin, the city where the Bauhaus closed, allows students to understand the School's fate after 1933. Students can visit:

  • Neue Nationalgalerie
  • Br鐬an Museum
  • Berlinische Galerie (Modern & Contemporary Art)
  • ADGV Trade Union School, Bernau

New York City (Optional)

Before departing for Germany, students can opt to visit New York City, which provided shelter to Bauhaus faculty and students, securing and shaping its critical fortune. This exclusive pre-departure experience includes visits to:

  • The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
  • Neue Galerie
  • Art Deco Walk, including the Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler building

Final Project

Each student will create a report that combines the latest Bauhaus scholarship with personal insights and analyses of the objects and buildings visited during the course. Given the breadth of the Bauhaus program, students will be able to concentrate on objects and buildings that correspond to their particular areas of expertise. As Art History integrates Digital Humanities technology, students will be trained to produce videos featuring original footage, images of examined objects, and voice-overs explaining their research. At the end of the term, they will have a choice between creating a traditional research paper or a video essay.

Technical Requirements

  1. A digital recording device that captures photographs and video (camera, cellphone, or tablet).
  2. A computer that allows video conference communication with instructors and has video editing software.

About the Course

ARTH 4389 will be team-taught by Dr. Orfila (Art History) and Dr. Ortega (Graphic Design), offering students a dynamic exploration of the Bauhaus. Through a combination of lectures and guided visits, students will uncover the movement's history, cultural impact, and iconic sites, experiencing firsthand the legacy that continues to shape art and design today.
