Remote Health Program

Pharmacotherapeutics for Remote Area Nurses

This online self-paced non-award course provides nurses with knowledge and skills to manage medicines safely in remote settings and advanced practice.

The course covers essential aspects of pharmacology, therapeutics, and clinical decision making, including:

  • Dosing
  • Administration
  • Monitoring
  • Tailored to the unique challenges of remote and Indigenous health

Assessment

The course includes:


  • Multiple-choice question quizzes at the end of each module
  • Interactive case study

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:


  • Apply knowledge of state and territory legislation and health service policies governing the possession, administration, and supply of medications in remote and isolated areas
  • Select, supply, and administer appropriate medication under scheduled treatment protocols integrating comprehensive assessment and best practice guidelines
  • Describe the principles of pharmacology; pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and how these principles relate to the treatment of individual patients
  • Engage in effective communication in a culturally respectful manner, with patients, carers, and other health providers, to ensure optimum health outcomes relating to medicines management by the registered nurse
  • Implement strategies that maximise treatment adherence and therapeutic relationships

Credit

The course provides 30 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) self-reported.
