Program Overview
The Visual Arts Major at Flinders University is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of the social and cultural contexts of visual arts, as well as the theoretical frameworks that inform their creation, interpretation, and reception. This 36-unit program explores the production, reception, and understanding of visual arts across cultures and time, providing students with a comprehensive foundation for careers in galleries, museums, education, cultural policy, research, and the broader creative industries.
Program of Study
To complete the Visual Arts Major, students must complete 36 units with a grade of P or better or NGP in each topic. The program of study includes:

Aims
The Visual Arts Major aims to:
- Develop students' understanding of the social and cultural contexts and the changing modes of representation and meaning making in the visual arts
- Introduce students to a range of global visual art histories, traditions, and practices
- Examine the theoretical frameworks that inform the creation, interpretation, and reception of visual art across different cultural and historical contexts
- Foster ethical and reflective engagement with issues of social justice through creative and scholarly inquiry
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the Visual Arts Major, students will be able to:
- Discuss the contexts shaping the production and reception of visual arts
- Evaluate theoretical approaches to explore the visual arts
- Interpret visual arts artefacts in their socio-cultural context
