Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is an initial teacher education degree that prepares pre-service teachers to teach in Middle and Senior Secondary educational settings. In the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), pre-service teachers will develop in-depth curriculum and pedagogy knowledge in teaching specialist areas aligned with state and national curriculum frameworks. The course provides a balance of education learning theory with specialised content knowledge and applied pedagogical approaches and will provide graduates with the ability to teach two areas to senior years schooling.

Program of Study Overview

To qualify for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), a student must complete 144 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic comprising:


  • 54 units of core topics
  • 18 units of option topics
  • Two 36-unit majors according to the Program of Study:
    • Year 1: 18 units of core topics plus 9 units from Major 1 and 9 units from Major 2
    • Year 2: 9 units of core topics plus 13.5 units from Major 1 and 13.5 units from Major 2
    • Year 3: 18 units of core topics plus 9 units of curriculum specialisation option topics that align with the two discipline areas of selected majors plus 4.5 units from Major 1 and 4.5 units from Major 2
    • Year 4: 9 units of core topics plus 9 units of option topics plus 9 units from Major 1 and 9 units from Major 2

Special Requirements

Applicants must complete a non-academic assessment task known as a Teaching Capabilities Statement as part of their application to demonstrate their motivation to teach, their strong interpersonal and communication skills, willingness to learn, resilience, self-efficacy, and strong organisational and planning skills.

  2. Apply content and pedagogical knowledge and skills to design academically rigorous, developmentally appropriate and socially equitable curriculum and learning experiences

  4. Analyse and critically evaluate research, and data to inform learning design for a diverse range of young people in Secondary educational settings, including non-academic pathways
  5. Interpret policy frameworks and legal requirements which govern teachers' work
  6. Synthesise learning to articulate how education can influence and respond to the demands made by a complex and ever-changing world

Student Progression Rules

The College will enact the Student Progress Policy to identify, intervene and provide assistance as required to pre-service teachers who are experiencing difficulty progressing in their enrolled course.


Professional Accreditation and Recognition

Upon successful completion graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.
