Introduction to the University Program
The School of Music is introducing a new residency program, which welcomes its first Indigenous artist-thinker. This program is part of a new project called Indigenous Voice, which aims to engage with Indigenous artists and leaders to create a music studies course delivered by Indigenous artists.
Program Details
The Indigenous Voice project has secured an Indigenous Research Capacity and Reconciliation – Connection Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The goal of this project is to create a music studies course that will be delivered by Indigenous artists.
Program Activities
The residency program includes a variety of workshops and performances, such as:
- A drum making workshop
- A Powwow Music Workshop
- A Ko'jua Workshop, which is a Mi'kmaw social dance
- A public concert, Tunes 'n' Talk: Traditional and Contemporary Mi'kmaw Powwow Music
- A First Light Culture Camp
