Political Science
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers a range of programs in Political Science, including a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Political Science, a BA in Law and Public Policy, and a Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science.
Major in Law and Public Policy
The Major in Law and Public Policy is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in the legal professions, public and non-profit sectors, or anyone interested in crafting solutions to real-world public problems. The program provides students with a solid understanding of the legal and political dimensions of policymaking, along with strong skills in public administration, legal reasoning, statistics, communication, and community-engaged policy design and delivery.
Program Requirements
To graduate with a Major in Law and Public Policy, students must complete 36 credit hours in courses offered or approved by the Department, including:
- 3 credit hours in POSC 1000
- 3 credit hours in LWPP 2600
- 3 credit hours in POSC 3010 or SOCI 3040
- 9 additional credit hours in LWPP courses, including a minimum of 3 credit hours at the 4000 level
- a further 18 credit hours in LWPP and/or POSC courses, including a minimum of 3 additional credit hours at the 4000 level
Joint Major in Law and Public Policy
The Joint Major in Law and Public Policy requires students to complete 33 credit hours in courses offered or approved by the Department, including:
- 3 credit hours in POSC 1000
- 3 credit hours in LWPP 2600
- 3 credit hours in POSC 3010 or SOCI 3040
- 9 additional credit hours in LWPP courses, including a minimum of 3 credit hours at the 4000 level
- a further 15 credit hours in LWPP and/or POSC courses, including a minimum of 3 additional credit hours at the 4000 level
Course Requirements
- First-year students must take POSC 1000 and may take POSC 1001
- First-year students are strongly encouraged to take ECON 1010 and ECON 1020
- Second-year students must take LWPP 2600 and may take other 2000-level courses in Political Science or approved courses in other disciplines
- Third-year students must take POSC 3010
- Fourth-year students must take at least 9 credit hours in LWPP courses, including a minimum of 3 credit hours at the 4000 level
Graduation Requirements
To graduate with a Major or Joint Major in Law and Public Policy, students must have an average of 60% or better in courses required for the Political Science program (excluding 1000-level courses). Students who receive 55% or less on any Law and Public Policy course at the 2000-level or higher are expected to seek advice from the Department to ensure adequate progress is being maintained.
