Introduction to the Master's Degree in Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution

The Master's program in Environment and Natural Space Management (EGEN) is a dual degree program offered by the University of Montpellier (UM) and the University of Quebec in Abitibi-T幦iscamingue (UQAT). This unique program provides students with an exceptional academic and cultural experience, allowing them to obtain two degrees: a Master's in Ecology and Forest Ecosystem Management from UQAT and a Master's in Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, Environment and Natural Space Management (EGEN) from UM.

Presentation of the Program

The Master's program in Environment and Natural Space Management (EGEN) promotes international mobility and openness to two complementary scientific environments. Participants acquire advanced skills in ecology, sustainable forest resource management, and restoration of disturbed environments, while benefiting from personalized supervision and immersion in two distinct academic cultures. The program is aimed at students motivated by research and innovation, preparing them for both doctoral studies and international careers in the fields of applied ecology, forestry, and conservation.

Training Structure

The program is offered by the Faculty of Science and includes a range of courses, such as:

  • Study of variability
  • Ecology 1: Concepts, Tools, and Applications
  • Evolution 1
  • English and professional development
  • Advanced ecology of ecosystems
  • CHOICE1, which includes two options: Advanced data processing and Description and inference

Course Descriptions

Study of variability

This course covers general linear models with one or more random explanatory variables, including regression and one-factor ANOVA. Students learn to interpret results, diagnose issues, and validate models.

Ecology 1: Concepts, Tools, and Applications

This course consolidates the foundations in ecology acquired by students and provides them with the tools needed to apply them in an integrated way to interpret the functioning of ecological systems. The course includes lectures, practical work, and field teaching.

Evolution 1

This course addresses both macroevolutionary phenomena and microevolutionary processes, providing a solid foundation of knowledge in evolutionary biology. The course includes lectures, practical work, and group sessions.

English and professional development

This course aims to develop professional autonomy in the English language, with a focus on tutorial courses and professional development.

Advanced ecology of ecosystems

This course covers the entire research process, from defining the problem to interpreting results and writing a scientific article. Students work in pairs or groups under the supervision of a mentor.

CHOICE1

Students can choose between two options:

Advanced data processing

This course covers generalized linear mixed models, methodology, and experimental protocols to account for biological reality.

Description and inference

This course provides a refresher on descriptive statistics, simple tests, and essential graphs for univariate and multivariate data. Students also learn about hypothesis testing, p-values, and Type I and Type II errors.

Admission Requirements

Applications can be submitted through a designated platform. Admission requirements and procedures are available through official channels.

Conclusion

The Master's program in Environment and Natural Space Management (EGEN) offers a unique opportunity for students to acquire advanced skills in ecology, sustainable forest resource management, and restoration of disturbed environments. With its dual degree structure and international mobility, this program prepares students for doctoral studies and international careers in applied ecology, forestry, and conservation.
