Biophotonics Module (BE41001)
The Biophotonics module provides an in-depth introduction to biomedical optics, focusing on the optics and photonics aspects of microscopy and endoscopy. These technologies are crucial for understanding how the human body works, from organ systems to cellular imaging.
Module Details
- Credits: 15
- Module code: BE41001
- Level: 4
- School: School of Science and Engineering
- Discipline: Biomedical Engineering
What You Will Learn
In this module, students will learn to link optical and photonic system architecture to image and data acquisition, including basic image and signal processing. Additionally, they will reinforce software skills to explore optical system design and delve into light-tissue interactions via Monte Carlo simulations in Matlab and Python.
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
- Problem solve more complex optical systems
- Apply linear algebra and calculus learned in previous years
- Apply their knowledge in tutorials, coursework tests, and assignments
Assignments / Assessment
- Coursework (50%): A collection of student-created technical files, including CAD, code, or circuits, which may be a combination of these. Coursework is continuously discussed, and students must demonstrate their knowledge of the tools used.
- Class tests (50%): Focus on optics and biomedical concepts
This module does not include a final exam.
Teaching Methods / Timetable
- Discussion sessions
- Problem-solving tutorials
The Biophotonics module is designed to provide a thorough understanding of biomedical optics, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply optical and photonic principles in biomedical engineering contexts.
