Introduction to the Legal English Module

What You Will Learn

In this module, students will:


  • Develop their academic literacy skills
  • Develop an awareness of legal and formal vocabulary
  • Improve conciseness and reduce ambiguity in their writing
  • Learn various techniques for using legal sources in their writing
  • Learn how to correctly reference others' work following the OSCOLA (Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities) guidelines

By the end of this module, students will be able to:


  • Understand legal academic assignment questions
  • Make and use outline plans to answer questions
  • Know how to structure paragraphs and sentences
  • Edit written work

Assignments and Assessment

  • Portfolio (100%): The module assessment consists of a portfolio that includes legal academic writing. Detailed written feedback will be provided.
  • This is a Pass/Fail module that will not contribute to the classification of any award and will be taken in addition to standard credits.
  • There is no final exam for this module.

  • Independent study Classes are designed to include a high level of critical thinking and reflection, following best practices for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teaching.
