Introduction to the Plant Biology for Sustainable Production Program

The Plant Biology for Sustainable Production program is a Master's program offered by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). This program is designed to educate the next generation of plant biologists, enabling them to develop plant-based solutions to complex problems within agriculture and forestry.

Program Description

The program focuses on plant-based solutions for the development of agriculture and horticulture. It covers essential knowledge about how plants work, their genetics, and interaction with the environment. The program is taught in English and is open to international students.

Specializations

The program has two specializations:

  • Plant Protection and Breeding (Campus Alnarp)
  • Abiotic and Biotic Interactions of Cultivated Plants (Campus Uppsala)

Plant Protection and Breeding

This specialization focuses on plant protection and plant breeding, aiming to secure crop production and increase yield without increasing inputs and lessening environmental and climate impacts.

Abiotic and Biotic Interactions of Cultivated Plants

This specialization provides insight into the complex life of plants, including their interactions with the environment, such as beneficial microorganisms, and how they handle stress from abiotic and biotic factors.

Program Structure

The program is a 2-year, 120-credit Master's program. It begins with an introductory course that provides basic knowledge of plant biology and molecular genetics. The first year includes three courses that deepen knowledge of subjects important to sustainable crop production. In the second year, students choose one of the specializations.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must meet the general entry requirements of a first-cycle degree of 180 credits and specific entry requirements, which include:

  • 90 credits in the main field of study, biology, or
  • 60 credits in biology and 30 credits in agricultural sciences, horticultural science, forest science, or forestry science

Admission also requires knowledge equivalent to the upper-secondary course English 6.

Degree Awarded

Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a Degree of Master of Science in Biology (120 credits).

Career Opportunities

The program prepares students for research and careers in land-based sectors, such as companies in plant breeding, plant protection, farming advisor, and farming companies, as well as public authorities.

Research Areas

The program is connected to strong research environments, providing a good basis for future studies. The research areas include plant biology, sustainable agriculture, and forestry.

Tuition Fees

Citizens of countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees. The total tuition fee is stated in SEK.

Conclusion

The Plant Biology for Sustainable Production program at SLU offers a comprehensive education in plant biology, preparing students for careers in research, industry, and public authorities. With its strong research environments and international recognition, this program is an excellent choice for students interested in sustainable solutions for agriculture and forestry.
