Program Details
The program in question appears to be "Evolution och ekologi för djurvetare" or "Evolution and ecology for animal science students." This is a 7.5 Hp course offered at the grundnivĺ (basic level) by the Institutionen för ekologi (Department of Ecology) at Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).
Course Description
The course provides new perspectives on natural history, welfare, social behavior, and diseases of domesticated and wild animals. It covers the evolutionary selection processes (natural, sexual, and artificial selection) and their relation to different animal species. The course also discusses evolutionary and ecological perspectives on the domestication process and how these perspectives can be used to better understand the morphology, behavior, welfare, and disease susceptibility of domesticated companion animals and livestock.
Course Objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to:
- Describe the evolutionary selection processes and their relation to different animal species.
- Explain evolutionary and ecological perspectives on the domestication process and how these perspectives can be used to understand the morphology, behavior, welfare, and disease susceptibility of domesticated animals.
- Discuss how evolutionary and ecological perspectives are used to understand the spread and impact of native species in natural ecosystems.
- Explain ecological and evolutionary processes in disease management and welfare of both domesticated and wild animals, with a focus on the importance of ecological processes within an integrated "One Health" perspective.
- Discuss how an understanding of natural selection principles can be extended to non-traditional fields, such as the development of internet memes and viral ideas in human environments.
Course Content
The course primarily covers the subjects of evolution and ecology as they directly relate to the domestication history and lifestyle of domesticated and wild animals. It focuses on basic principles of natural, sexual, and artificial selection, which are relevant to all areas of animal science. The course provides a deep understanding of evolutionary and ecological processes and how they can be applied by animal scientists to extend their understanding of animal biology, behavior, diseases, medicine, and culture.
Teaching and Learning
The course includes lectures, online discussions, and reflections on how evolutionary and ecological concepts can be applied within traditional animal science areas. The course content is built up of lectures, online discussions, and reflections over how to use evolutionary and ecological concepts within traditional animal science fields. Obligatory elements are the reflections and online group discussions.
Assessment
The requirements for the course's different grades are specified in the grade criteria, which should be available no later than at the start of the course. Approved participation in obligatory reflections and discussions is required for a passing grade.
