Program Overview
The Program Jordbrukslandskap contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the environmental quality in agricultural landscapes. The program's results are used for monitoring environmental quality objectives, such as "Ett rikt odlingslandskap" and "Ett rikt v鉶t- och djurliv," at the national and regional levels. Additionally, the program provides data for the follow-up of EU agricultural policy and international reporting on changes in landscape structure, environmental impact, and biodiversity.
Monitoring of Agricultural Landscapes
National Inventory of Landscapes in Sweden (NILS)
The national environmental monitoring program, NILS, monitors biotopes, land use, natural values, and landscape structure in all natural types throughout the country. This includes mountains, forests, wetlands, agricultural landscapes, and built-up environments, as well as watercourses and shores.
Regional Environmental Monitoring in Landscape Squares (Remiil)
The regional environmental monitoring, Remiil, includes mapping and field inventory of grasslands, wetlands, and small biotopes in arable land. The results of the monitoring serve as a basis for evaluating green infrastructure, landscape variation, policy instruments, and human impact.
Environmental Monitoring of Natural Values in Power Line Corridors
SLU conducts environmental monitoring of natural values in meadow-like vegetation in power line corridors, which are managed by Svenska kraftn酹. The environmental monitoring is carried out throughout the country and provides a basis for evaluating clearing measures.
Biogeographic Follow-up of Grassland and Rocky Outcrop Nature Types
As a basis for follow-up of the EU's Habitats Directive, several nature types with sparse or uneven distribution are monitored. This includes, among other things, alvar, limestone outcrops, rocky outcrop dry meadows, and swamp meadows along larger watercourses. The follow-up is carried out through aerial photo interpretation and field inventory.
Biogeographic Follow-up of Small Watercourses
SLU monitors the ecological status of protected small watercourses throughout the country below the mountain region. The mapping includes, among other things, hydromorphological structures, dead wood, and migration barriers. This is a complement to the county administrative boards' biotope mapping of watercourses.
Monitoring of Arable Land Conditions
Soil and Crop Inventory
An investigation of the soil's condition and the crop's quality. Carried out every tenth year in 2,000 test points on Swedish arable land.
Soil Compaction Program
An investigation of how cultivation affects the physical properties of arable land. A compacted soil gives lower production and has an increased risk of leakage of plant nutrients.
Overall Syntheses and Evaluations
The program has participated in several overall syntheses and evaluations, including:
- Overview and needs analysis for environmental monitoring in agricultural landscapes, which has resulted in proposals for new monitoring systems for arable land.
- Investigations of the usability of available environmental monitoring data, which has led to the initiation of new research projects.
- Investigations of environmental subsidies in other countries and opportunities for improvements to the Swedish environmental subsidy system.
- Investigations of green infrastructure for grasslands, which have resulted in complements to existing environmental monitoring programs and the initiation of research programs.
