Master of Science (Geochemistry) Program

The Master of Science (Geochemistry) requires a minimum of 36 semester hours, including coursework and research credits.

Program Requirements

  • Course work: 24.0 semester hours
  • Research credits: 12.0 semester hours
  • Total Semester Hours: 36.0

Course of Study

To ensure breadth of background, the course of study for the Master of Science (Geochemistry) must include:

  • CHGC503: Introduction to Geochemistry (3.0 semester hours)
  • CHGC504: Methods in Geochemistry (2.0 semester hours)
  • Three of the following courses (3.0 semester hours each):
    • CHGC509: Introduction to Aqueous Geochemistry
    • GEOL513: Hydrothermal Geochemistry
    • GEOL535: Litho Ore Forming Processes
    • GEGN586: Numerical Modeling of Geochemical Systems
    • GEOL512: Mineralogy and Crystal Chemistry
    • CHGC514: Geochemistry Thermodynamics and Kinetics
    • GEOL540: Isotope Geochemistry and Geochronology

Laboratory Course Requirements

In addition, all students must complete at least one laboratory course selected from the following (2.0 semester hours):

  • GEGN530: Clay Characterization
  • GEOL523: Reflected Light and Electron Microscopy

Thesis Requirements

Master of Science (Geochemistry) students must also complete an appropriate thesis, based upon original research they have conducted. A thesis proposal and course of study must be approved by the student's thesis committee before the student begins substantial work on the thesis research.
