Founded in 1922 as a drama studio under the leadership of Akaki Phaghva, it evolved into the "Stage Arts Institute" on October 10, 1923. Kote Marjanishvili, a legendary Georgian director, was one of its founders and established professional Georgian acting and directing schools.
