UTMB Sealy Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program Overview

The mission of the UTMB Sealy Department of Emergency Medicine Residency Program is to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world by offering innovative education and training, pursuing cutting-edge research, and providing the highest quality patient care.

Program Description

The emergency department (ED) is the gateway to hospital care for many patients, and the physicians who receive these patients must be able to respond to a wide variety of medical needs. The program aims to develop a highly skilled, well-trained emergency medicine workforce.

Program Details

  • The program is led by Dr. Jehle, who has a distinguished career in emergency medicine, including numerous academic and community hospital appointments.
  • The American College of Emergency Physicians defines emergency medicine as a specialty "dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of unforeseen illness or injury."
  • EM physicians must be prepared to handle an array of cases, including:
    • Respiratory distress
    • Traumatic injuries
    • Severe bleeding
    • Cardiac and stroke symptoms
    • Fractures
    • Complex wounds
  • Emergency physicians also play vital roles beyond the ED, including urgent care centers, disaster response, and extreme environments.

  • Collaborations: Antarctica, Japan, Southeast Texas Poison Center
  • Research Projects:
    • Benefits of Tadalafil and Sildenafil on Mortality, Cardiovascular Disease and Dementia

    • Ultrasound Education
    • Ultrasound Elective Rotation (2 or 4 weeks), MS3 and MS4
    • Acting Internship in Emergency Medicine for MS4 students
  • The new UTMB Emergency Medicine Residency will support five residents per year in its three-year ACGME-accredited program.
  • The program also offers a 4-year combined Emergency Medicine/Aerospace Medicine Program, with two residents per year.

Program Leadership

  • Dr. Jehle's clinical expertise includes airway management, trauma, oximetry research, and cardiac resuscitation with head cooling.
  • He is perhaps best known for pioneering the use of bedside ultrasound in the United States.
  • The program aims to integrate ultrasound more deeply into the curriculum at UTMB, with several ultrasound fellowship-trained faculty members.
