Introduction to the Alexander Blewett III School of Law Program

The Alexander Blewett III School of Law offers a unique summer program in cooperation with the University College Cork. This ABA-accredited 2-credit comparative law summer program is available annually.

Program Details

Dates and Location

The program takes place from May 22 to June 5, 2026, at the University College Cork, Cork, Ireland.

Curriculum

The 2026 curriculum focuses on "What is Corruption and How to Prove it - A Comparative Look at Legal Accountability for Corruption." The program analyzes legal frameworks relating to corruption in both the United States and Ireland, with a heavy emphasis on oral advocacy skills.

Classes and Schedule

Classes are held in person at the University College Cork. The first week's classes are from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, and the second week's classes are from 9:00 am to 11:45 am and 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm.

Enrollment and Eligibility

Anticipated enrollment is 19 students from the Alexander Blewett III School of Law and other law schools, with an equivalent number of students from the University College Cork. Students must be in good academic standing to participate.

Faculty

The on-site program director for the 2026 program is Professor Andrew King-Ries. Participating faculty include Professors Andrew King-Ries, Karen Van Essen, Seán Ó Conaill, and other University College Cork Law faculty.

Assessment

Assessment is based on a series of short assignments and exercises, which students complete in teams with University College Cork students. Professors King-Ries and Van Essen serve as primary instructors for the course.

Program Cost

The program cost is $4,250, covering tuition and housing. Students are responsible for all other expenses, including flights, ground transportation, meals, and other travel expenses. A non-refundable deposit of $500 secures participation on a first-come, first-served basis.

Housing

Students will stay in university housing, a short walk from the University College Cork Law building. Each student will have their own bedroom and en-suite bathroom, with a kitchen and living area shared with other students in the program.

Refunds

Refunds are available if the program is changed or canceled due to low enrollment, social unrest, labor strikes, natural disasters, incapacity or unavailability of adequate faculty, travel warnings, or unforeseen events beyond the law school's control.

Passports and Visas

Valid passports are required for enrollment and participation in this program. Non-U.S. nationals may need to secure a visa to participate. Students traveling to Ireland for this program do not qualify for work visas; they are considered traveling as tourists.
