Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The department has a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) task force with a mission statement and pillars. The DEI task force also hosts diversity speaker events and offers a summer surgical internship program.


DEI Summer Surgical Internship

The DEI Summer Surgical Internship is a 4-week program that aims to create a surgical workforce that reflects the diversity and needs of the population served by UMass. The program's objectives are to:


  • Introduce the field of surgery and the various surgical subspecialties
  • Gain insight into the path to become a surgeon and provide the knowledge and tools required to be successful
  • Provide hands-on surgical simulation experience, clinical exposure, and research opportunities to foster and expand such interests
  • Build relationships between the community and surgical department at UMass
  • Develop formal mentorships and sponsorships in pursuit of future surgical careers

Program Details

  • Internship dates: June 2 - June 27, 2025, or June 30 - July 25, 2025
  • Internship aims:
    • Participate in a clinical research project and/or case report with the goal of obtaining at least 1 publication
    • Participate in clinical duties in the OR, clinic, and floors
    • Each student will be assigned a faculty mentor and will meet weekly to check progress on aims
    • Each student will also be assigned a medical student mentor to aid in the application process
  • Four local college students underrepresented in medicine will be chosen to participate in the summer internship
  • Each student will be provided a stipend of $2700
  • Housing and food are not included
