Introduction to the 2026 University of California, Riverside (UCR) 3+1+X Program

The University of California, Riverside (UCR) is a public research university located in Riverside, California, approximately one hour from Los Angeles. UCR is part of the University of California system and is ranked among the top public universities in the United States.


School Overview

  • Rankings: UCR is ranked 36th among public universities and 76th among all universities in the United States by U.S. News & World Report (2024). It is also ranked among the top 1.3% of universities globally by CWUR.

Program Description (3+1+X)

The 3+1+X program is designed for students to spend their final year of undergraduate studies at UCR, followed by an opportunity to pursue a master's degree.


Senior Year (at UCR)

  1. Status: Students will be enrolled as non-degree seeking students at UCR's business school, taking undergraduate courses.
  2. Credit Transfer: Credits earned can be transferred back to the student's home university to replace their final year of undergraduate coursework, subject to the home university's approval.
  3. Course Selection: Students can choose courses from various directions, including finance, accounting, marketing, management, supply chain management, information systems, and business data analysis, with the approval of their academic advisor.
  4. Outcomes:
    • Official UCR Transcript: Students will receive an official transcript from UCR.
    • UCR Business Certificate: Students will be awarded a non-degree certificate from UCR's business school.
    • Direct Path to Master's: Students who meet the GPA and application requirements can be directly admitted to UCR's master's programs without needing to take the GMAT/GRE or English proficiency exams.
    • Professor Recommendation: Outstanding students may have the opportunity to receive a letter of recommendation from their professors.
    • OPT Eligibility: Students who complete the program and meet the requirements can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) for up to 12 months.

Master's Stage (X)

Students who complete the senior year with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher can apply for UCR's master's programs, including:


  1. Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAc): A one-year STEM-certified program.
  2. Master of Finance: A one-year STEM-certified program.
  3. Master of Business Analytics: A one-year STEM-certified program.
  4. MBA: A two-year STEM-certified program.

STEM OPT Extension: After completing a STEM-certified master's program, students can apply for an additional 24 months of OPT, for a total of up to 36 months.


Application Requirements

  1. Academic: Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in their first 2-2.5 years of undergraduate studies.
  2. Language: Students must meet one of the following English proficiency requirements:
    • IELTS: 6.5
    • TOEFL iBT: 80
    • Duolingo English Test: 100
    • CET-4: 500 or CET-6: 460

  • Other Expenses: Not included in the tuition are medical insurance, miscellaneous fees, accommodation, meals, transportation, personal expenses, and international airfare.
  • Estimated Total Budget: $40,000 to $50,000 per year, depending on living arrangements and personal spending.

Selection and Application Deadline

  • Target Students: Domestic university students in their third year.
  • Application Deadline: May 15, 2026, with rolling admissions until spots are filled. It is recommended to complete the application and visa process 3-4 months in advance.
