Certification Course for Kindergarten Principals

The Certification Course for Kindergarten Principals is designed to develop and equip participants with the leadership skills essential for taking up the principalship in a kindergarten. The course aims to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of serving principals.

Programme Features

The course features include:

• Developing mission and vision on leadership role and continuous professional development
• Understanding the roles and functions of a kindergarten principal and the essential principles of management and supervision
• Working out strategies for building a shared vision with stakeholders
• Devising appropriate strategies to execute effective resource management and promote quality early childhood education
• Making appropriate planning and evaluation for professional development and appraisal of teachers
• Upholding professional conduct of teachers
• Evaluating and enhancing the effectiveness of planned and implemented curricula in facilitating student learning
• Taking the lead in cultivating a positive and safe learning environment in school
• Understanding the importance of community resources and building connections between school and the community
• Building effective home-school cooperation mechanisms to enhance parents' understanding of their children's development and involvement in school activities

Professional Recognition

As required by the Education Bureau, all new principals from the 2009/10 school year should possess a degree in early childhood education, one-year post-qualification experience, and should have completed the Certification Course for Kindergarten Principals before, or exceptionally within the first year of their appointment. Graduates of this course are recognized by the Education Bureau as meeting one of the requirements for registration as kindergarten principals.

Programme Structure

The course consists of core and elective modules, totaling 120 contact hours of instruction, and a 30-hour self-study term paper.

  • Management and Organization (42 hours)
  • Learning and Teaching (27 hours)
  • School Culture and Support for Children (21 hours)
  • Children's Development (18 hours)
• Elective Modules (any one out of the four modules):
  • Be an Effective Leader (12 hours)
  • Curriculum and Assessment for Children with Diverse Needs (12 hours)
  • Mass Media and School Crisis (12 hours)
  • Home-school Partnership (12 hours)
• Term Paper (30-hour assignment on a self-proposed topic on school work)

Mode of Study

The course will be conducted in a part-time mode, taking around 12 months to complete, including the submission of the term paper. Delivery methods include lectures, tutorials, group discussions, and case studies. Coursework is required in each taught module. The course will be conducted in a face-to-face mode, but may be conducted in an e-learning mode if face-to-face classes need to be suspended due to special circumstances.

Award

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded the "Certificate for Kindergarten Principals" by the School. Participants must achieve an overall passing grade in each module and fulfill the minimum attendance requirement for each taught module.

Fees

• Application Fee: HK$150 (non-refundable)
• Tuition Fee: HK$26,900 (by two installments, subject to revision)

Class Schedule and Venue

The admission year/term is Autumn 2027 (September), and the venue is to be confirmed.

Minimum Admission Requirements

Applicants should be:

1. Aspiring kindergarten principals with a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) degree (or equivalent) or Post-graduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Education), and at least three years' teaching experience in kindergartens.
2. Serving kindergarten principals.

Qualifications Framework

The course is recognized under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 4).
