MA Double Degree Bielefeld and Bologna
The Faculty of Sociology at Bielefeld University offers a unique opportunity to complete a double Master's degree in Sociology with the University of Bologna. This program allows students to obtain two internationally recognized Master's degrees, one from Bielefeld University and one from the University of Bologna.

Eligibility and Application Procedure
- Only Master's students in their first semester can apply for the double degree program.
- The application deadline is January 31st of each year.
- Required application documents include:
- Completed double degree application form
- Letter of motivation (maximum 1 page)
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form (maximum 1 page)
- Transcript of Records (of the Bachelor's program) and overview of current courses taken
- Language certificate for English B2
- Language certificate for Italian B1
- Selection procedure: Up to five applicants are selected for the program based on their application documents.
Course of Study and Organization
- Students study at Bielefeld University in the 1st and 2nd semesters before traveling to Bologna University in the 3rd semester.
- It is also possible to complete the 3rd and 4th semesters at Bologna University, but this must be indicated in the application.
- The double Master's degree program is designed to fulfill all requirements necessary to obtain a Master's degree from both Bielefeld University and Bologna University.
- Regular compulsory modules must be studied at Bielefeld University, including the introductory module, a student research project, and the conclusion module.
- During the stay at Bologna University, students are required to take two courses from the departments SPS/07 to SPS/11, each worth 8 ECTS, for a total of 16 ECTS.
- Additional courses totaling 12 ECTS can be freely chosen from the courses offered.
Information for Students from Bologna
- Modules: A module usually consists of two thematically assigned seminars. Coursework must be completed in both seminars, and an examination must also be completed in one seminar.
- Timetable: The course program is published approximately 3 months before the start of each semester.
- Recognition: For the recognition process and to receive the certificate from Bielefeld, students need to complete specific steps, including filling in the recognition table and applying for recognition.
Financing
- Erasmus+ partial scholarship: Students on the Master's double degree program in Sociology receive a partial scholarship for 5 months (for one semester).
- The monthly scholarship installment is 540 euros.
- Social top-ups of 250 euros can be applied for by students with fewer opportunities.
Support
- Bielefeld University offers a wide range of services for international students, including support in organizing their stay, finding accommodation, and dealing with authorities.
- The International Office supports international students and offers advice on financing studies, finding accommodation, and questions regarding visa matters.
