Introduction to the Undergraduate Program of Fire Protection Engineering

The Department of Fire Protection Engineering at Southwest Jiaotong University was established in 2004, making it the third key university in China to offer this major. The department boasts 15 full-time academic staff members, including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 senior engineer, and 9 lecturers. Currently, there are approximately 320 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students enrolled in the department. The experimental center is equipped with eight specialized laboratories, including the Fire Combustion Laboratory, Fire Prevention Theory and Engineering Laboratory, and Fire Risk Assessment Laboratory, among others. These laboratories have invested over 20 million yuan, with a total area of nearly 2000 square meters, and are equipped with advanced fire measurement and analysis instruments, as well as specialized calculation software for fire and evacuation.

Objectives of the Program

The primary objective of this program is to train professionals in the fire protection field who possess socialist core values, comprehensive development in moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetic grounding, and a hard-working spirit. Graduates of this program are expected to have solid basic knowledge and professional skills, with a global insight, scientific literacy, and innovative spirit. They should be qualified for various roles, including design and construction, inspection and maintenance of facilities or equipment, consulting and assessment, safety management, education and training, and scientific research in fire protection or associated areas.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from this program, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Students should be able to apply knowledge in mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals, and specialized courses to solve complicated problems in building fire prevention and fire protection.
  2. Problem Analysis: Students should be able to use basic principles of applied mathematics, natural science, and engineering science to identify and express complicated problems in building fire prevention and protection.
  3. Design/Develop Solutions: Students should be able to provide solutions to complex engineering problems, such as developing fire-retardant materials and fire extinguishing agents, and designing building fire prevention systems.
  4. Scientific Research: Students should be able to apply scientific methods to analyze complex engineering problems in fire science and fire protection engineering.
  5. Use of Modern Tools: Students should be able to develop, select, and use universal and specialized technologies, resources, and modern engineering tools.
  6. Engineering and Society: Students should be able to reasonably analyze and evaluate the social, health, safety, legal, and cultural impact of fire risk and fire prevention engineering practices.
  7. Environment and Sustainability: Students should be familiar with fire safety-related laws and regulations and be able to understand and demonstrate the environmental, social, and sustainable development impacts of engineering solutions.
  8. Ethics: Students should understand and commit to engineering professional ethics and norms in fire engineering practice.
  9. Individuals and Teams: Students should be able to fulfill the roles of individuals, team members, and team leaders in a multi-disciplinary context.
  10. Communication: Students should be able to effectively communicate with colleagues and the public on complex engineering issues in the field of fire science and fire protection.
  11. Project Management: Students should understand and master the principles of engineering management and economic decision-making.
  12. Lifelong Learning: Students should have the ability to continuously learn and adapt to the development of society and technology.
