Introduction to the Japanese Language Program

The Japanese Language Program is a one-year or half-year intensive Japanese language learning program established and operated by the Center for Japanese Language at Waseda University. Learners can choose courses from a variety of subjects tailored to their abilities and interests, allowing for comprehensive Japanese language learning.

Program Policy

Admission Policy

The program aims to welcome students from all over the world who have a clear goal for Japanese language learning, intellectual curiosity, and a strong desire to study. These students must thoroughly understand the program's diploma policy, curriculum policy, and learning support policy.

Diploma Policy

The program aims to cultivate individuals who can think and act independently in a global society, possessing multiple cultures and languages. It seeks to produce global citizens who can create new societies through problem-solving skills, creative ideas, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding.

Curriculum Policy

The program provides learning opportunities for students to give meaning to the Japanese language in their own lives and to learn Japanese autonomously. It constructs a curriculum that allows students to combine various Japanese language subjects and liberal arts subjects, enabling them to design their own learning.

Support Policy

The program establishes a support system aimed at enabling international students to study autonomously, including advice on Japanese language classes and learning. It also provides comprehensive support for learning outside the classroom through collaboration with related organizations.

Program Duration and Semesters

The program duration is either half a year or one year, divided into two semesters:

• Spring semester: April 1 to September 15
• Fall semester: September 21 to March 15 Admission is twice a year, in April for the spring semester and in September for the fall semester. The tuition fee for the 2024/2025 academic year is as follows:
• For a one-year program: 515,200 yen per semester, totaling 1,030,400 yen
• For a half-year program: 531,200 yen

Curriculum

The Japanese Language Program is divided into eight levels based on the learners' Japanese language abilities. Each level provides comprehensive Japanese language learning. The level to be taken is determined by the results of a test taken at the time of admission.

Completion Requirements

To complete the program, students must earn at least 26 credits for a one-year program or 13 credits for a half-year program, with a passing grade.

Established Subjects

Each subject has a different number of credits based on the number of classes per week. Japanese language subjects are 1 credit for a once-a-week 100-minute class, while subjects from other departments are 2 or 4 credits for a once-a-week 100-minute class. All classes are conducted in Japanese.

Extracurricular Activities

The Waseda University International Community Center (ICC) provides extracurricular activities for international students to deepen their understanding of Japanese society and culture. Details such as participation methods, reception periods, and fees can be found on the ICC's website.

Examinations and Grades

Grades are determined based on examination results, reports, and daily classroom activities. A score of 60 or above is considered a pass for each semester. However, students who do not attend at least two-thirds of the total class time will be considered failed.
