M.Tech. Admissions

M.Tech. students are admitted once a year, in July. The admission process involves various categories, each with its own duration, relevant description, and admission procedure.

Categories and Admission Procedures

The following categories are available for M.Tech. admission:

• Teaching Assistantship (TA)
  • Duration: Two years
  • Relevant Description: Financial assistance provided by the Institute, requiring eight hours of Teaching Assistant work per week.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on 70% GATE score and 30% performance in interview.
• IIT B.Tech. (IB)
  • Duration: Two years
  • Relevant Description: Financial assistance provided by the Institute, requiring eight hours of Teaching Assistant work per week. IIT B.Tech. Graduates with CPI > 8.0 can apply under this category.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on an interview administered by the Department.
• Sponsored Candidates (SW)
  • Duration: Two/Three years
  • Relevant Description: Working professionals from reputed Industrial or Research Organizations/Academic Institutions can apply under this category. The candidates should have a valid GATE score OR two years of relevant professional experience after the qualifying degree (B.E./B.Tech.).
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on an interview administered by the Department.
• Research Assistantship (RA)
  • Duration: Three years
  • Relevant Description: Financial assistance provided by the Institute, requiring twenty hours of work per week to be spent in an undergraduate laboratory and other administrative work assigned by the Department.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on 70% GATE score and 30% performance in interview. For IIT B.Tech. Graduates with CPI >8.0, the admission is based only on the interview administered by the Department.
• Research Assistantship through Project (RAP)
  • Duration: Three years
  • Relevant Description: Financial assistance provided from a sponsored research project being done by a faculty member of the Department, requiring twenty hours of work per week to be spent on the sponsored research project.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on 70% GATE score and 30% performance in interview conducted by the concerned faculty member.
• Project Staff (PS)
  • Duration: Three years
  • Relevant Description: This category is only for those who are employed on Sponsored Research Projects at IIT Bombay, requiring twenty hours of work per week to be spent on the sponsored research project.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on an interview administered by the Department.
• Institute Staff (IS)
  • Duration: Three years
  • Relevant Description: This category is only for those who are employed as Institute Staff at IIT Bombay.
  • Admission Procedure: Admission based on an interview administered by the Department.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest departments in the Institute, with 62 full-time faculty members and over 50 full-time administrative and technical support staff.
