Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary Teaching)

Overview

The Bachelor of Education Early Childhood and Primary Teaching enables students to develop the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to become a teacher in both early learning development centres (children aged birth-4 years) and in primary schools from kindergarten to Year 6 (children aged 4-12 years). During the course, students will study and develop a strong grounding in learning, teaching, and curriculum; both general primary curriculum as well as that specific to early childhood education. Professional Experience is a key component of the degree.

Admission Requirements

• Enrolment is subject to restriction due to professional recognition requirements.
• Teaching is a complex and demanding profession. Teachers are expected to act ethically at all times with the best interests of children in mind.
• Prospective preservice teachers are expected to be literate and numerate. A prospective teacher is also required to be a physically, emotionally, and socially able individual who can navigate the rigours of school and classroom life.
• All students must meet Australian Professional Standards for Teachers - Graduate Level in order to graduate and to be eligible to apply for registration as a teacher in Western Australia.
• Prior to placement in any school or childcare centre for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.
• A maximum of 50% of total Professional Experience days in the course may be taken overseas.
• As per normal undergraduate admission requirements.
• Equivalent of an Academic IELTS overall score of 7.5 with no band less than 7.0 and a score of no less than 8.0 in speaking and listening.
• International students must commence in Semester 1 only.
• All students who commence an initial teacher education course in Australia from 2017 onwards are required to complete Literacy and Numeracy Tests for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE), administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER).

Learning Outcomes

1. Determine an appropriate level of teaching skills to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners.
2. Evaluate and articulate practical strategies for creating rapport with and guiding children's behaviour to support their well-being and safety and to maximise learning opportunities.
3. Design learning programs that meet statutory curriculum, assessment, and reporting requirements.
4. Prioritise achievement of AITSL Graduate Professional Standards and ACECQA Curriculum Requirements.
5. Appraise diagnostic and assessment data to evaluate children's learning and differentiate teaching practice and apply timely and appropriate types of feedback to improve children's learning.
6. Assess subject, cross-curricular, and integrated curriculum approaches for Early Childhood Education and care settings and teaching in primary schools.
7. Explain knowledge and understanding of the implications for learning of children's physical, cultural, social, linguistic, and intellectual characteristics including principles of inclusion and strategies for differentiating teaching to meet the specific learning needs of children across the full range of abilities.
8. Employ strategies for working effectively, sensitively, and confidentially with parents/carers, recognising their role in their children's education.

On completion of the Bachelor of Education Early Childhood and Primary Teaching, students have a widely accepted qualification from a recognised university and are eligible to apply for registration with the Teacher Registration Board of WA (or other appropriate state registration boards), and the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).
