Introduction to the Cooperative Program in Mechanical Engineering and Its Automation
The Cooperative Program in Mechanical Engineering and Its Automation between Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) and University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) is a Chinese-foreign cooperative education program approved by the Ministry of Education. The program is jointly carried out by BUCT and UDM, with the corresponding major of BUCT being Mechanical Engineering and Its Automation, and that of UDM being Robotics and Mechatronic Systems Engineering.
Program Overview
The program aims to reform teaching modes and methods, strengthen the training of students' innovative practical ability, improve the quality of talent training, and cultivate socialist builders and successors with international vision and international competitiveness. The program started student recruitment in 2014 and has recruited 293 students to date.
About UDM
University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) is a comprehensive private university founded in 1877. It has more than 100 programs provided by 8 schools, including the School of Engineering, Business School, Law School, and School of Nursing. UDM has been named the Best University of the United States by US News and Report for 12 consecutive years and is a First Class Research and Education Institution in Michigan.
Program Features
The program has the following features:
- Robotics and Mechatronic Systems Engineering and Mechanical Engineering and Its Automation have great potential for development.
- International faculties will undertake more than one-third of the core courses of BUCT, and students will have the opportunity to participate in face-to-face teaching provided by outstanding overseas teachers in China.
- Students will study at UDM for one year and receive two undergraduate degrees from BUCT and UDM.

Study Mode and Degree
The study mode of the program is 3 + 1, where students spend the first three years studying in China and the fourth year in the United States. Students who complete their studies and achieve the required results will receive an undergraduate certificate and a bachelor's degree of engineering in Mechanical Engineering and Its Automation from BUCT and a bachelor's degree of engineering from UDM.

Recruitment Capacity and Tuition
The recruitment capacity of the program is 80 students. The tuition fee is RMB 50,000 per year at BUCT, and the tuition fee for one year at UDM is subject to the tuition criteria of UDM. Students with excellent academic performance can receive a scholarship, subject to the official information of UDM.
Recruitment Criteria
The program is a planned unified enrollment program, and students can directly apply for the program when applying for their intended university programs. The admission criteria shall be those for the first batch of undergraduate recruitments in the national unified recruitment plan. The admission score line depends on the national college entrance examination and may fluctuate around the undergraduate program admission score line of BUCT.

The School of International Education (SIE) attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' innovation ability and has formed a complete excellent innovation training system. SIE students have won numerous awards in discipline competitions and innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, and have published academic papers in domestic and foreign professional journals. The employment rate and overseas further study rate of the students from the program are high, with many graduates receiving offers from famous international universities.
International Curriculum System and Teaching Methods
The program is guided by the learning-centered and outcome-based methodology, and SIE has introduced nearly 100 foreign specialized courses. The program uses a series of teaching innovations, such as project-based teaching, blended teaching, flipped classroom, and research teaching, and has achieved significant teaching results.

The School regularly holds lectures of foreign experts, international cultural festivals, Chinese and foreign student exchange meetings, and English corner, allowing students to fully experience foreign cultures and exercise their cross-cultural communication skills.
