Master's Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences
The Master's Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences focuses on the interfaces between languages and digitalization in today's world. This programme provides an opportunity to study language in today's digitalized society from a variety of perspectives: sociolinguistics, language technology, and translation.

Studies
During the two-year programme, students acquire the necessary academic skills, theoretical knowledge, and other capacities to enable them to continue their studies in data-oriented Linguistics or Translation Studies PhD programs, or to be able to work as specialists in non-academic jobs requiring intensive and extensive experience with language data or language and translation technology for research analytic purposes for identifying trends in society.
Structure of Studies
Compulsory Introductory Courses (20 ECTS)
These courses contain a considerable selection of basic courses in Linguistics and Language Technology.
Main Subject Studies (80 ECTS)
Main subject studies include the MA Seminar (5 ECTS) and MA Thesis (30 ECTS) and a combination of compulsory and optional courses in Linguistics and Language Technology.
Finnish Studies (4 ECTS)
Finnish studies will introduce you to the Finnish language. You can also complete a minor in Finnish as a Second Language.
Elective Studies (16 ECTS)
Elective studies include courses that serve to deepen students' expertise and/or promote the topic of the Master's thesis. They can be chosen from the other sub-programme, from other international study programmes, or they can be general knowledge courses.

Admission Requirements
Eligibility
A previous bachelor's degree corresponding to at least three years of full-time academic studies from an institution for higher education is required from all master's degree applicants. The degree must be awarded by an internationally recognized university.
English Proficiency
Applicants must either meet the language proficiency criteria or reach the minimum required language test results to be considered eligible to the University of Eastern Finland.
Application Process
Application Procedure
In 2026, a maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the Master's Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences. Admitted applicants will gain the right to complete a Master of Arts degree with a major in General Linguistics.

Student Selection
Student Selection Procedure
The admission process for the Master's Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences aims to ensure the fair selection of high-quality applicants. Student selection is based on the application documents and an evaluation of how the applicants' skills and competences align with the master's studies applied for.
Admission Results
The results of the student selection for studies starting in September 2026 will be published by 27 May 2026. All applicants will be notified of the admission decision by email.
Tuition Fees and Waivers
Tuition Fee
The annual tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is 10,000 €. There are no tuition fees for students who are citizens of EU/EEA countries or Switzerland.
Waivers
Applicants subject to tuition fees can apply for tuition waivers and scholarships during the application process. In the Master's Degree Programme in Linguistic Data Sciences, the best 70 % of admitted applicants receive a scholarship covering 50 % of the tuition fee. In addition, the highest ranked applicant will be completely exempted from paying the tuition fee.
