Bachelor's Degree Programme in Social Sciences

The Bachelor of Social Sciences degree programme is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the world and its complexities. The programme focuses on the dynamics of societal change, examining factors that contribute to wellbeing, alienation, education, labour market, and cultural relationships.

  • Tuition fee: EU/EEA nationals are exempt from tuition fees, while non-EU/EEA nationals are required to pay €10,000 per academic year. A tuition waiver scholarship of 50% per year is available for the top 70% of applicants.

Structure of Studies

The Bachelor of Social Sciences degree familiarises students with key concepts and methods in social sciences. The programme consists of:


  • Basic studies in Social Sciences (25 ECTS)
  • Intermediate studies in Social Sciences (60 ECTS)
  • Language and communication studies (12 ECTS)
  • General studies (18 ECTS)
  • Minor studies (65 ECTS)

Teaching emphasizes contemporary society and the labour market, with a focus on welfare needs. Online lectures, seminars, and reading groups are used, with tasks ranging from learning journals to essays and exams.

Programme-Specific Application Process and Student Selection

Students are selected in two ways:


  1. Entrance Examination Admission: 25 student places are available through an entrance exam.
  2. Admission Based on Previous Studies: A maximum of 5 students can be admitted based on completing basic studies in Social Science (25 ECTS) at the University of Eastern Finland.
