Introduction to the Just Move Program

The Just Move program is a rehabilitation project for cancer patients, initiated by Professor Nele Adriaenssens, coordinator of Oncological Rehabilitation at UZ Brussel and PI of the research line Cancer Rehabilitation at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The program started eight years ago and has grown into a successful support and aftercare program for UZ Brussel, with 250 patients participating annually.

Program Details

• The program consists of 12 weeks of physical guidance after treatment.
• Patients participate in group rehabilitation, which provides psychosocial benefits through contact with fellow patients, exchange of tips and tricks, and mutual support.
• The program takes place outside the hospital, in a green environment, allowing patients to start a new, positive chapter in their lives.
• The goal of the program is to strengthen weakened muscles, improve endurance and condition, and increase flexibility.

New Equipment and Partnership

Thanks to a partnership with Basic-Fit, the Just Move program has acquired new, modern, and sustainable equipment, including 13 cardio machines and 9 strength training machines. These machines are multifunctional, energy-efficient, and can be easily placed anywhere, as they do not require electricity.

Research and Ambitions

The Just Move program is part of a larger national multicenter study on "Improving quality of life and reintegration of adjuvant-treated women with breast cancer through physical training and lifestyle guidance," funded by RIZIV. The program aims to study the effects of physical activity on cancer prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Future ambitions include expanding the program to address long-term effects of cancer and cancer treatment, such as fatigue, physical complaints, and neurocognitive dysfunction, through a multidisciplinary approach.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is committed to cancer research, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from various disciplines, including medicine, bio-engineering, pharmacy, kinesitherapy, and psychology. VUB Foundation and Cancer Research

The VUB Foundation supports cancer research initiatives, including the VUB Yamina Krossa Fund, which focuses on breast cancer research, and the VUB-UZB Paul De Knop Fund, which aims to support patients with melanoma and other types of cancer. These initiatives demonstrate the university's commitment to finding new treatments and improving the quality of life for cancer patients.
