Programme Overview

The PhD programme in Epidemiology is a full-time study programme that spans three academic years. The programme is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in epidemiology, with a focus on research and academic excellence.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, applicants must have a Master's Degree (MS) in Epidemiology or a related discipline, with a research project worth at least 30 ECTS and a first-class grade of 7.25. Alternatively, applicants who have completed 90-120 ECTS studies at level 6.1, with a research project worth fewer than 30 ECTS, may be considered if they can demonstrate equivalent research experience.

Programme Requirements

To complete the programme, students must:

• Complete a 180 ECTS PhD thesis
• Complete a 3-6 ECTS course in research ethics
• Complete the courses L楅085F Epidemiologic methods and L楅097F Topics in Epidemiology

PhD Thesis

The PhD thesis in Epidemiology must count for a minimum of 180 credits. Students who do not hold an MS degree in epidemiology may be required to complete up to 36 credits of predefined courses. The thesis should include at least three manuscripts, of which two have been published or accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals at the time of thesis defence.

Research Ethics

The programme includes a course in research ethics, which is intended for PhD students only. The course is adapted to the needs of students from different fields of study and is taught in English as a three-day seminar during the first week of classes in August.

Course Descriptions

Research Ethics (HSP073F)

This course is a concise version of HSP806F Ethics of Science and Research, which is taught in the spring semester. The objective is to train students in reasoning about ethical controversies relating to science and research in contemporary society.

PhD Thesis in Epidemiology (FAR001L)

The PhD thesis should count for a minimum of 180 credits. Students that do not hold an MS degree in epidemiology are required to complete up to 36 credits of predefined courses.

Ethics of Science and Research (HSP806F)

This course is intended for postgraduate students only and is adapted to the needs of students from different fields of study. The course is taught over a six-week period and covers topics such as professionalism and the scientist's responsibilities, demands for scientific objectivity, and research ethics.

Epidemiologic Methods (Epidemiology II) (L楅085F)

The aim of this course is to increase students' understanding of advanced methods in epidemiology and to enhance students' ability to interpret results and assess the quality of scientific research in epidemiology.

Language Requirements

International applicants for whom English is not their first language must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score as proof of English proficiency. Minimum scores accepted are 85 on the TOEFL internet-based test with a minimum score of 18 in each section, a IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each section, or a PTE Academic test of minimum 60.
