Master's Degree in Continuing Education in Investigative Journalism, New Narratives, Data, Fact-Checking, Transparency, and Artificial Intelligence

The Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid and the digital newspaper El Confidencial are organizing this master's degree with the aim of training professionals for the new present in journalism, where data journalists, developers, and product managers from innovative digital media in Spain and Latin America, together with reporters and researchers with long experience, teach this own degree. The master's degree is the union of the best investigative and data journalism in the country and innovation and technology put at the service of telling reality.

Objectives

The main objective of the Master in Investigative Journalism, New Narratives, Data, Fact-checking, and Transparency is to train Journalism and Communication professionals who can respond to the demand for the creation of new narratives based on innovation in formats and information products developed through research techniques, data verification, and transparency.

Graduate Profile

Graduates will acquire skills in data journalism and information visualization, enabling them to transform large volumes of data into understandable and accessible information narratives. They will also be able to evaluate and take advantage of the opportunities offered by new narratives, fostering innovation in journalistic storytelling and the development of new products that open up new avenues of communication.

Programme

The master's program consists of the following modules:

• Module I: Journalistic Investigation (11 ECTS): This module prepares students to apply journalistic investigation techniques in different products and professional contexts.
• Module II: Data Journalism and Transparency (11 ECTS): This module works on the techniques of access to public information, including the Law of Transparency and Open Government.
• Module III: Fact-Checking (9 ECTS): This module teaches students to recognize the features, characteristics, and effects of disinformation in the digital age and the current legislative framework to counteract it.
• Module IV: New Journalistic Narratives (11 ECTS): This module explores the possibilities of journalistic innovation in the creation of new information products and services through technological and design tools and the use of the latest techniques and applications of Artificial Intelligence.
• Master's Thesis (12 ECTS): The Master's Final Project consists of the completion, individually or in a group, of a portfolio of journalistic investigations applying the tools and techniques developed in the academic program.
• Curricular Practices (6 ECTS): The practices will be carried out in the newsrooms of the media, production companies, and national and international agencies that develop investigative journalism, data, documentation, transparency, or new narratives.

Recipients

Access requirements: Students must present a graduate or graduate degree and pass the entrance tests with a grade higher than 5. Selection criteria: In the event that the number of applications exceeds the number of places offered, a selection will be made based on the assessment obtained in the access tests, previous experience in media accredited through the Curriculum Vitae, and the place reservation date.

Academic Management and Faculty

The master's degree is directed by Dr. Manuel Gertrudix Barrio and Dr. Antonio Rubio Campańa, with a faculty that includes renowned journalists, writers, and academics such as Nacho Cardero, Clara Jimenez Cruz, Jose Maria Olmo, Martha Law, Tomas Ocana, and many others.

Quality Guarantee

The master's degree has an internal quality assurance system, with a manual and a composition of the commission that includes the presidency, secretary, student representative, and representatives from employer companies and society.

Duration and Development

The master's degree has a duration of 60 credits, with 600 contact hours, and is delivered in person at the Manuel Becerra URJC Headquarters, from October 19, 2026, to September 30, 2027.

Reservation of Place and Enrollment

The pre-registration period is from March 2, 2026, to June 30, 2026, and the enrollment deadline is from July 1, 2026, to September 15, 2026. The title price is 7,900, with the possibility of a scholarship. A pre-registration fee of 500 is required, which is included in the total cost of the course and will be refunded if the academic application is not accepted.

Assignment of Study Aid

The assignment of study aid is based on the documentation attached, forms, and place of delivery, which includes the national identity document, university degree, curriculum vitae, and responsible declaration of veracity of the data provided.

Results Report

The results report includes quantitative information on the results obtained in the follow-up of the master's degree, with indicators such as student profile, teacher evaluation, degree of satisfaction, labor insertion, and external internships.

Improvement Actions

The Quality Assurance System of the Rey Juan Carlos University establishes that the degree's Quality Assurance Commission will annually analyze the information derived from the degree's indicators and prepare a report that will include improvement plans if the results so indicate.
