Student Design and Experiential Learning Center

The Student Design and Experiential Learning Center at Missouri S&T offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in design and manufacturing.

About the Program

The Miner Baja racing team provides students with an experience that simulates industry, with an inclusive culture that encourages students to have fun while learning about design and manufacturing.

Program Details

  • The team designs and fabricates an off-road vehicle from the ground up and then races it in a competition hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers against dozens of other universities from around the world.
  • The team accepts all majors, even non-engineering majors.
  • The team is directed and run by students, allowing members to pick what they want to do.
  • There are 5 different sub-teams:
    • Suspension
    • Drivetrain
    • Composites
    • Controls
    • Electronics
  • Members are encouraged to join any projects they are interested in, and it's common for members to move around in what sub-teams they participate in.

Meetings and Schedule

  • General meetings are held every Monday at 7PM in Toomey 295, open to everyone, even those not on the team.
  • The first few weeks of the fall semester include introductory meetings, but the team soon gets into the work that follows through the spring semester.
  • Sub-teams have their own meetings.
  • Baja has shop meetings every Friday and Saturday, and drive days are fit in wherever possible.

Benefits

  • Members develop skills in design, fabrication, leadership, communication, and finance.
  • Students have the opportunity to develop specialized technical skills, such as welding, machining, engineering drawings, and modeling with computer software.
  • The team provides a very realistic experience for engineering students interested in design, manufacturing, or business.
  • The team is favored by industry for producing students with practical experience.
  • The knowledge gained, combined with a team culture that teaches students how to work in a professional, teamwork-driven environment, results in well-rounded graduates.
  • The team promotes creating a balance between academics and team activities, allowing members to be truly successful.
