Introduction to the Radioactive Waste Disposal Technology Research and Development Center

The Radioactive Waste Disposal Technology Research and Development Center at National Tsing Hua University is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary academic research teams and hosting various academic discussions and conferences. The center aims to address the long-standing issue of radioactive waste disposal, which has been a major concern despite the operation of nuclear power plants.


2025 Summer Research Program for Undergraduates

The center is calling for undergraduate students to participate in the 2025 summer research program, which will take place from July to August for a period of eight weeks. The program is open to students from all disciplines, and those who are interested can join the research team to work on various research projects under the guidance of experienced professors and researchers.


Research Topics

The following research topics are available for the 2025 summer research program:


  • Topic 1: Development and establishment of different computer numerical analysis techniques for studying the migration parameters of radioactive nuclei in underground water environments.
    • Research objective: Utilize numerical analysis or AI techniques to study the migration parameters of radioactive nuclei and explore their impact on nuclear migration behavior.
    • Expected outcomes:
      • Obtain distribution coefficients for different rock and soil materials.
      • Compare the effects of different conditions on the absorption of radioactive nuclei.
      • Establish environmental site setting standards using numerical analysis or AI techniques.
  • Topic 2: Investigation of the effects of radiation on biological systems, focusing on the absorption of boron-containing drugs by liver cancer and colorectal cancer cells.
    • Research objective: Evaluate the absorption efficiency of boron-containing drugs by cancer cells under different radiation conditions.
    • Expected outcomes:
      • Measure the absorption of boron-containing drugs by liver cancer and colorectal cancer cells under different radiation conditions.
      • Compare the distribution of different drugs within cells to identify the most suitable boron-containing drug for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).
  • Topic 3: Development of low-carbon and recycled materials for removing and purifying radioactive nuclei from underground water environments.
    • Research objective: Explore the use of low-carbon and recycled materials for removing radioactive nuclei from underground water environments.
    • Expected outcomes:
      • Obtain distribution coefficients for different low-carbon and recycled materials.
      • Compare the effects of different conditions on the removal and purification of radioactive nuclei.

Program Details

  • Number of participants: 2-3 students
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students from all disciplines, including those from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Duration: June 9, 2025, to August 31, 2025
  • Stipend: NT$6,000 per month
  • Work schedule: The program will include safety training, literature review, experiments, and reporting.
  • Objective: The program aims to cultivate students' hands-on experience in research, provide a foundation for future academic pursuits, and encourage participation in academic conferences and research projects.
