B.S. Zoology

The B.S. Zoology program offers training in animal biology through coursework in evolutionary biology, ecology, behavior, and anatomy and physiology of both vertebrate and invertebrate animals.

Program Description

This program maintains a close association with the California Academy of Sciences, where extensive research collections of insects, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are available for a wide variety of studies by advanced undergraduate and graduate students. Also nearby, the San Francisco Zoological Garden offers numerous opportunities for ecological and behavioral studies of native and exotic animals. In addition, courses such as Herpetology, Ornithology, Entomology, Mammology, and Natural History of the Vertebrates emphasize field trips to diverse sites throughout California.

Career Opportunities

  • If you have a deep love of animals, this career could be for you.
  • The types of jobs zoology majors can obtain are numerous and can include:
    • Zookeeper
    • Animal caretaker
    • Veterinary technologist or technician
    • Environmental consultant
    • Technical writer
    • Biology teacher
    • Research technician
  • The degree also prepares students to pursue graduate work in ecology and systematic biology, entomology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, and related areas.

Program Consolidation

As of Spring 2022, the Zoology course of study has been consolidated and is now represented within the Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology (EECB) bachelor of science degree. For students who may be following these paths, advisors are always available to support your understanding and progress in these degrees.
