Course Overview

The course "Critical Reflection and Writing in Context" (BK2453) is a foundation course, level I, that focuses on the development of critical writing skills and reflection in the context of contemporary artistic practices.


Course Content

This course takes its starting point with the notion that reflection and context are key to facing the challenges of today's multiple and diverse contemporary artistic practices. The student will be looking into, learning from, and developing the frames that surround and contextualize artistic practice. Everything from the title, bio, CV, portfolios, applications, documentation, and representation formats the artistic work and practice, as does the specific and general, societal, historical, and political backgrounds.


Learning Outcome

When finishing the course, the student will be able to:


  • Develop critical writing skills through reading, analysis, and writing assignments.
  • Analyse and identify contextual characteristics of contemporary art practices in relation to creating aesthetic experiences.
  • Support the development of artistic projects with writing.

Learning Methods and Activities

The core learning activities are based on assignments reflecting directly on the artistic work and the writing of the students. Student presentations, group discussions, as well as writing and feedback inform the course environment. Student active participation is key to the success of the course, as the course material is shaped by the emerging artistic practices of the students.


Specific Conditions

Approved compulsory assignments are valid in the current semester.


Compulsory Assignments

  • Participation in course activities.
  • Written assignment.
  • Presentation.

Further on Evaluation

Students will be assessed in assignments during the course, including:


  • Written assignments, such as context analysis, press release, application outline text.
  • Presentation in class of case studies.

Postponed or re-examination will take place in the next exam period. In the case of a retake, the entire course must be repeated.

Admission to a programme of study is required:


  • Drama and Theatre (BDRAMA).
  • Film Production (BFVPROD).
  • Fine Art (BBK).
