Rules

This Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree is offered with different streams or School Subject Combinations. Each combination is structured for a specific teaching field, and students must follow one of these combinations. Students may only offer one combination unless approved by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) for a second BEd degree in a different School Subject Combination.

• Graduates will be qualified to teach from Grades 7 to 12 in the selected School Subject Combination.
• A compulsory component of Teaching Practice must be undertaken according to specific criteria each year:
  • Five weeks of practical experience is required each year, with three consecutive weeks mandatory.
• The qualification consists of both semester and year modules.
• Year modules must be registered during the January registration period of each academic year.
• Students are required to register with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) from their first year of BEd registration.
• Transitional arrangements have been approved for students migrating from the non-aligned BEd to the aligned BEd, specific to this degree and stream and are non-transferable to any other qualification or stream.
• Students must register Teaching Methodology concurrently with the applicable Teaching Practice module of the academic level.
• Unisa reserves the right to cancel any teaching practice module not registered with the relevant teaching methodology.

Purpose Statement

The Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching qualification is designed to develop qualified classroom teachers who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills in the teaching of specific specialisations. The qualification emphasizes:

• Fostering self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers.
• Developing the professional disposition and self-identity of students.
• Encouraging students to become active citizens and instilling a sense of citizenship in their learners.
• Providing a well-rounded education that equips graduates with essential subject content knowledge, educational theory, and methodology for effective teaching.
• Specializing in at least three teaching specialisations and accommodating multiple learning levels among students through curriculum differentiation.
• Involving a minimum of 20 weeks and a maximum of 32 weeks in supervised and assessed school-based practice.

The program will be presented using both online and distance learning modes.

Admission Criteria

• New applicants and Unisa students who applied for admission to a different qualification must register only after receiving an offer of placement from Unisa.
• Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year once the registration period opens.
