Introduction to the JUSST Exchange Program

The JUSST (Japanese University Studies in Science and Technology) exchange program is a collaborative effort between Harbin Engineering University and the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Japan. This program aims to foster research capabilities in science and technology among participating students.


Program Overview

  • Program Type: High-level undergraduate and graduate research program
  • Program Duration: One semester or one academic year, with the 2019 spring semester being the focus
  • Program Structure: Combines coursework and experimental research under the supervision of UEC faculty
  • Courses:
    • Japanese language courses
    • Science and engineering professional courses
    • UEC academic skills courses
  • Research Opportunities: Students can join research groups based on their interests and fields of study, conducting independent research under the guidance of UEC instructors.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the JUSST exchange program, applicants must:


  • Be patriotic, have excellent moral character, and a strong desire to participate in the exchange
  • Be in their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies or be a full-time graduate student
  • Have a strong academic record with an average score of 80 or above (GPA 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale)
  • Have a TOEFL iBT score of 79 or above, TOEFL PBT score of 550 or above, IELTS score of 6.5 or above, or equivalent English proficiency
  • Have no requirement for Japanese language proficiency
  • Have a good foundation in their major, especially in information science, natural sciences, or engineering
  • Be physically and mentally healthy, with a positive attitude towards learning and adherence to rules and regulations
  • Be able to adapt to new environments and challenges, and be willing to cooperate in cross-cultural and interdisciplinary settings.

  • Application Period: October 17, 2018, to November 2, 2018

    • Recent photos
    • Health certificate
    • JASSO scholarship application (for full-year exchange students)
    • Language proficiency test results
    • Current transcript
    • Study plan for UEC
    • Research plan (for graduate students)
    • Letter of recommendation
    • Identity and passport copies
    • Video introductions
  • Submission: Applicants must submit the above documents to the International Office by the deadline.

Financial Information

  • Tuition Fees: Exempt
  • Living Expenses: Students are responsible for their living expenses, travel costs, insurance, and other fees.
  • Scholarship: The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) may provide scholarships to a limited number of exchange students.
