Master of Science and Technology: Visual and Creative Artificial Intelligence (ViCAI)
Overview
The Visual and Creative Artificial Intelligence (ViCAI) track offers high-level scientific courses taught by faculty from École Polytechnique and partner companies. This unique program aims to impart knowledge in two complementary subjects: artificial intelligence and visual computing. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of multimodal artificial intelligence and learn to effectively implement the latest techniques. The training will equip them to be the next innovators who apply AI to visual content, providing new solutions to creative tasks.
Visual computing, represented by "Vi" in ViCAI, involves the processing and generation of multimedia content—ranging from images and videos to texts and sounds, as well as animated 3D virtual worlds. This content is crucial for communication and storytelling, as evidenced by the diversity of online media and its utilization in the entertainment industry (films and video games). It is also essential for designing and simulating new objects, from product prototypes to buildings, vehicles, or robots. Additionally, virtual reality techniques enable users to seamlessly explore and interact with virtual content.
These applications propel AI to assist users in their most creative tasks, denoted as "C" in ViCAI.

Academic Pre-requisites
- Ideally, candidates should hold a dual degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.
- A degree in either field is acceptable, provided the candidate has a solid foundation in the other. Mathematical training should include courses in statistics, linear algebra, and analysis. Computer science training must encompass at least one course in algorithms, data structures, and traversal.
- Candidates holding other qualifications may also be considered if they possess strong competencies in the aforementioned subjects.
To directly enter the second year (M2), candidates must hold a master's or a bachelor's degree (240 ECTS or more) in applied mathematics, including courses in machine learning, algorithms, and visual computing, or in computer science with a solid background in visual computing, mathematics, and machine learning.
Professional Outcomes
Companies increasingly seek researchers and engineers capable of developing original and competitive AI algorithms. The program's focus on visual computing naturally guides students toward applications related to image processing, virtual worlds, product design, conversational agents, or drone and robot control.
Graduates may choose to either pursue doctoral studies in a research laboratory in France or abroad or work in companies and start-ups across various industrial sectors. These sectors include, but are not limited to:
- Virtual reality, video and image editing, film and gaming: Adobe, Dassault Systems, Disney, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nvidia, Sony, Ubisoft.
- Digital applications for smartphones, computers, or personal assistants: Shazam, Google, Meta, Huawei, Wemap.
- E-commerce and online advertising: Amazon, Criteo, Cdiscount, FNAC, eBay.
- Autonomous vehicle control, drones, and robotics: Valeo, BMW, Stellantis, Renault, Airbus.
- Visual computing and AI in other professional fields: Anatoscope, GE healthcare (Health), Real Estate (Homiwoo), Helsing, Idemia (Security applications).
Approximately one-third of students opt to pursue a PhD—often through CIFRE thesis arrangements in companies—after completing the master's program.
