Semester at CSUN (SAC) Program

The Semester at CSUN (SAC) program enables international students who meet CSUN's English-language proficiency requirements to enroll in undergraduate credit classes at the university for two semesters. Typically, students choose SAC to complete coursework, study subjects not taught in their home countries, gain new perspectives, experience campus life at an American university, and learn about Southern California's culture.

Program Overview

Students may choose from the many courses offered by the university each semester. Enrollment is on a space-available basis and requires students to meet the course prerequisites and obtain the department's or instructor's approval. The program offers a range of support services, including academic advisement, assistance with registration, and general assistance throughout the semester to ease assimilation with campus life.

Curriculum

The SAC program is a university study-abroad program that enables international students to enroll in regular undergraduate university credit or noncredit classes. Students can choose from various courses offered by the university each semester and enroll on a space-available basis by meeting the course prerequisites and obtaining instructor approval. With some restrictions, the credits earned may be applied toward a degree at CSUN or another university or college.

Campus Life

The campus has a large, diverse, and active community that welcomes international students. Students can participate in various activities, such as:

• Student clubs: meeting students with common interests in over 300 clubs and organizations
• University events: attending lectures, symposia, or presentations on favorite academic or professional topics
• Student events: concerts, festivals, holiday celebrations, game tournaments, and more
• Athletic games: cheering on the CSUN athletic teams
• Health and fitness: signing up for the university's fitness and recreation center, taking exercise classes, or joining intramural or club sports teams
• Group trips: participating in trips to popular destinations, such as Las Vegas, San Francisco, or theme parks

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the SAC program, students must:

• Be at least 18 years old by the start of the program
• Have completed high school
• Be an undergraduate-level student in their home country (graduate students are accepted on a case-by-case basis)
• Have a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (undergraduate) or 2.5 (graduate) based on a 4.0 grading system
• Meet the CSUN English-Language Proficiency Requirements
• Pay the program application fee
• Submit all required documents, including:
  • Copy of passport
  • Evidence of financial support
  • English-Language Proficiency score
  • Official transcripts from high school and college/university (if applicable)
  • Certificate/diploma of high school and college/university graduation (if applicable)

English-Language Proficiency

The following exams and minimum scores are accepted:

• IELTS: 6.0 (undergraduate), 6.5 (graduate)
• TOEFL: 61 (iBT, undergraduate), 80 (iBT, graduate), 500 (PBT, undergraduate), 550 (PBT, graduate)
• PTE Academic: 50 (undergraduate), 58 (graduate)
• iTEP: 3.8 (undergraduate), 4.0 (graduate)
• Cambridge CAE: Duolingo DET: 95 (undergraduate), 105 (graduate)
• EIKEN: Pre-1 (2304 min, undergraduate), 1 (2630 min, graduate)

Tuition and Fees

The program tuition and fees include:

• Tuition and program fees: $6,900 (up to 12 credit units for undergraduate students or 9 credit units for graduate students)
• Application fee: $150
• Housing and meal plan: $7,300 (18 weeks, spring 2026), $7,790 (18 weeks, fall 2026 and spring 2027)
• Additional unit fee: $370 per unit (fall 2025 and spring 2026), TBD (fall 2026 and spring 2027)

Program Dates

The program dates are:

• Fall 2025: August 20-21 (orientation), August 23 (start date), December 18 (end date)
• Spring 2026: January 14-15 (orientation), January 20 (start date), May 15 (end date)
• Fall 2026: August 19-20 (orientation), August 22 (start date), December 18 (end date)
• Spring 2027: January 20-21 (orientation), January 23 (start date), May 14 (end date)
