Introduction to the Physician Assistant Studies Program

The Physician Assistant Studies program at Long Island University is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent and compassionate healthcare providers. The program is a 28-month professional degree that prepares students to work in a wide variety of clinical settings.

Program Overview

The program is divided into two main components: the didactic year and the clinical year. The didactic year provides students with a foundation in the basic sciences and introduces them to the principles of clinical medicine. The clinical year provides students with hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, including surgery, emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The program's accreditation status is currently Accreditation-Probation, which is a temporary accreditation status that indicates the program is making progress towards meeting the accreditation standards but requires additional time to come into full compliance.

Mission

The mission of the Physician Assistant Studies program is to educate men and women of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in the art and science of medicine, so that they may become competent, compassionate, and high-quality healthcare providers.

The program has several goals and outcomes, including:

• Medical Knowledge: The program strives to prepare students and graduates to be knowledgeable, clinically competent providers of high-quality medical and surgical care.
• Community Service: The program encourages PA students to serve the community and to embrace compassionate service as a fundamental cornerstone of Physician Assistant practice.
• Professionalism: The program strives to generate national and regional awareness, appreciation, and promotion of the value and key role of the physician assistant on the healthcare team.
• Interprofessional Education: The program strives to educate students to successfully collaborate with colleagues and work in interdisciplinary teams to promote patient-centered care.
• Employment and Career Satisfaction: The program's goal is to have new graduates secure gainful employment within 8 months of graduation and to be satisfied with their careers as Physician Assistants.

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the program, applicants must:

• Obtain a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
• Maintain a required grade-point average of 3.0 or above
• Complete all prerequisite coursework, including general biology, general chemistry, human anatomy, human physiology, microbiology, and statistics
• Complete a minimum of 500 hours of direct patient care experience
• Submit a personal statement, three satisfactory recommendations, and complete the GRE

Advanced Standing Policy

The program does not offer advanced standing to any applicants, including those with prior experience as a medical student or physician assistant student, or foreign medical graduates.

The program has established technical standards that all students must meet, including:

Health Requirements

All students entering or re-entering the program must complete and submit a Health Examinations/Vaccinations form and additional health forms required for entry into the clinical year.

Didactic Year Curriculum

The didactic year curriculum includes courses in:

• Clinical Laboratory Science

Clinical Year Curriculum

The clinical year curriculum includes ten clinical rotations in different specialty areas, including:

• Internal Medicine
• Surgery
• Pediatrics
• Family Medicine
• Emergency Medicine
• Obstetrics and Gynecology
• Behavioral Medicine

Student Employment Policy

The program does not recommend student employment due to the rigorous curriculum, but any student engaging in gainful employment must notify the Program Director.

Background Checks and Drug Testing

Many clinical affiliates require background checks and/or drug testing for employees, volunteers, and students, and a criminal conviction and/or the use of illegal drugs may impede or bar entry into the chosen field of study.

Student Grievances

The program has a formal grievance procedure for resolving student grievances, including those alleging actions prohibited by legislation.

The projected expenses for the program include:
