Introduction to the Two-Year International J.D. Program

The University of Akron School of Law offers an accelerated two-year Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree program for students and practicing lawyers with a foreign law degree. This program values the contributions that international students bring to the Akron Law community and invites students to obtain an American law degree from a respected law school for just over $25,000 per year.

Program Details

The Two-year International J.D. Program enables applicants who have earned a first degree in law outside of the United States to:

• Transfer up to 29 credits from a qualified foreign law degree program toward a J.D. degree at Akron Law.
• Gain admission without taking the LSAT or GRE examination.
• Sit for the bar examination in all 50 American states.
• Study on a beautiful and safe campus in a vibrant city known for its hospitality, affordability, and many attractions.
• Be in close proximity to many large U.S. cities, with Akron being a 40-minute drive from Cleveland, two hours from Pittsburgh, and 2.5 hours from Columbus.

• The option to earn other degrees in addition to the J.D., such as an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law or a joint master's degree in fields like business administration, taxation, or public administration.

Application Process

To apply for the International J.D. program, students may start their studies in either January (spring semester) or August (fall semester). Admission to the program is competitive, and applications should be submitted by the following deadlines:

• If requiring a visa: March 15 for the fall semester and October 15 for the spring semester.
• If not requiring a visa: March 31 for the fall semester and November 15 for the spring semester.

Required Application Components

Applicants must submit the following to be considered for admission:

1. A complete application form.
2. An active LSAC account.
3. An active Credential Assembly Service (CAS) subscription.
4. A CAS Law School Report, including a transcript from every college or university attended.
5. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores, with required scores being 102 for the TOEFL IBT and 7.5 for the IELTS.
6. A resume summarizing education, work experience, publications, and other relevant credentials and accomplishments.
7. A personal statement that may expand on the application, reveal a side of the applicant not expressed on the application, or describe significant personal accomplishments and challenges.

Optional Application Components

While not required, most applicants submit the following:

• Letters of recommendation from instructors, employers, colleagues, or others.
• Significant nonacademic experience, such as volunteer work, employment history, academic honors or awards, or extracurricular activities, which can be included as an attachment with the application.
