Introduction to the University of Akron School of Law Summer 2026 Study Abroad Program

The University of Akron School of Law offers a unique opportunity for students to participate in a Summer 2026 Study Abroad Program in South Africa and Botswana. This 3-credit intersession class provides students with the chance to learn about the history, culture, legal systems, economic development, and natural resource management of these remarkable countries.

Program Details

The program begins with 5 classroom days in the U.S., where students will learn about the history, culture, legal systems, economic development, and natural resource management of South Africa and Botswana. The class will then travel to Botswana and South Africa for over two weeks, spending time in Gaborone, Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, and Cape Town.

Dates

• The program is scheduled to take place in May and June 2026.
• Class will be held at the law school from 9 am 3:15 pm, Monday Thursday, with a final discussion and passport check on Friday before departing for the airport.

Trip Itinerary

The trip will include visits to historic sites, local attractions, courts, and meetings with officials. Some of the activities and destinations include:

• Johannesburg: tour of historic sites, including Soweto, Museum of Apartheid, Constitutional Court, and Cradle of Humankind.
• Gaborone: game drive in Mokolodi game reserve, meetings with leading lawyers and judges, tour of High Court, Magistrates Court, and Kgotla (Traditional Court).
• Kruger National Park: two-day safari, guided morning and evening game drives, and educational activities to investigate natural resource management issues.
• Cape Town: tour of the South African Parliament, meetings and lectures with participants in the struggle against Apartheid, local lawyers, and local law professors, coastal tour, and visit to Robben Island.

Registration and Costs

• Students must register and pay for the 3-credit course.
• The cost of the Study Abroad Program includes:
  • Seat Deposit: $200 (applied toward total cost)
  • Program Fee: $500
  • Travel Cost: $4,500 (includes all international and local flights, lodging, ground transportation, group meals, and other included activities)
• Total Course Fees: $5,200

Estimate of Additional Personal Expenses

• US Passport Fees (if needed): $165
• Entertainment and meals on your own: $150
• Fees and admissions for independent tours: $50
• Souvenirs: $100

Trip Requirements

• Compliance with all travel recommendations by the U.S. government
• Agreement to any and all quarantine requirements connected with travel and/or positive Covid test results
• Compliance with all requirements of UA's Education Abroad Office
• A valid U.S. passport
• All required inoculations (including Covid-19 vaccinations)
