Chronic Pain Medicine Fellowship
The Chronic Pain Medicine Fellowship at the University of Oklahoma is an ACGME accredited training program under the department of Anesthesiology. The program offers a continuum of education in pain medicine according to the requirements set forth by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA).
Experience
The goal of training is to prepare the trainee to be a consultant in pain medicine. Throughout the year, the fellow will be trained to:
- Obtain thorough history and physical exams for evaluation of chronic pain
- Interpret imaging modalities for assessment of pathological chronic pain problems
- Perform a multitude of interventional pain techniques for alleviation of chronic pain The fellow will also interact with other medical specialties, including radiology, neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, palliative care, oncology, pediatrics, as well as subspecialties of anesthesiology, to foster a multidisciplinary approach for management of chronic pain.
Objectives
During the 12 months, the fellow will develop skills in different aspects of pain medicine, including:
- Acute pain medicine
- Inpatient chronic pain management
- Neuraxial procedures and peripheral nerve blocks for surgery
- Chronic pain management of adults and children
- Cancer pain medicine
- Interventional procedures
- Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar neuraxial procedures under fluoroscopy
- Spinal column augmentation techniques
- Neuromodulation
- Intrathecal drug delivery
- Neurolytic techniques
- Peripheral nerve blocks and sympathetic blocks
- Myofascial pain treatments
- Peripheral nerve stimulation
- Psychological aspects of pain
- Radiological evaluation
- Role of physical therapy
- Practice and financial management
- Knowledge and experience required to perform as a consultant
- Interaction with other specialties and referring physicians
