Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN)

Course on "Electricity Systems and Future Scenarios"

The course will take place from 6-11 November 2016, at the E-classroom, Centre For Educational Technology (CET), IIT Guwahati, Guwahati.


Objectives

The primary objectives of the course are as follows:


  1. Introduce participants to global energy systems and economic activity
  2. Examine traditional electricity generation systems, architecture, efficiencies, costs, and emissions
  3. Identify solutions to mitigate climate change through renewable energy, efficiency, carbon capture, and storage
  4. Discuss future electricity supply scenarios

Who can attend

  • BTech/MSc/MTech/PhD students or faculty from academic institutions interested in learning about technology related to electricity systems
  • Executives, engineers, and researchers from all fields of engineering and science, including R&D labs and government organizations

Registration and Fees

  • A nominal registration fee of Rs. 500/- (non-refundable) is to be paid for online registration
  • Course fees:
    • Students: Rs. 1000 (will be refunded after the course)
    • Academic Institutions (faculty members): Rs. 10,000
    • Industry/Research Organizations: Rs. 20,000 for any of two modules; Rs. 30,000 for both modules
    • Participants from Abroad: US $500

Course Details

The course will cover the following topics:


  • Introduction to energy use, historical, global, and regional patterns, access
  • Fossil fuel power plants and related issues
  • Introduction to fission-based nuclear power generation, components, and working principles
  • Combined power plants, GT-ST, MHD-ST
  • Thermionic Device, Thermoelectric device, and Fuel cell for power generation
  • Renewable energy 1: Wind and Hydro
  • Renewable energy 2: Solar and Biomass
  • Transition Paradigm: From centralized to decentralized, dumb to smart
  • Networks and storage
  • Smart Grids design
  • Data management and control

Accommodation

Accommodation based on nominal charges (per day) will be available to all participants at IIT Guwahati campus. Student participants will be accommodated in boys/girls hostels. Participants from academic, R&D institutes, and industry will be accommodated in the IITG guest house on a twin-sharing basis. Participants need to bear their own accommodation and food expenses.


Teaching Faculty

Dr. Richard Blanchard

Dr. Richard Blanchard is a Lecturer in Renewable Energy from Loughborough University's (UK) Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology. His research focuses on energy systems, bioenergy, energy for development, and renewable energy education.


Dr. Pinakeswar Mahanta

Prof. P. Mahanta is a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. His major area of research is thermodynamics, heat transfer, and renewable energy. He has established an international platform for research in the area of bio-energy with the University of Nottingham, University of Birmingham, and Loughborough University, UK.
