Introduction to the Master in Software Engineering with AI

The Master in Software Engineering with AI is a program offered by the Universitŕ della Svizzera italiana (USI). This program aims to provide students with the foundational technologies behind AI for software engineering, as well as many applications of AI to improve software development.

Program Structure and Contents

The program features courses delivered by world-renowned researchers from the Software Institute at the USI Faculty of Informatics. The study program consists of four modules: Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Electives, and Master thesis.

Software Engineering Module

The Software Engineering module provides students with deep knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques, including software design, software architecture, software performance, software analysis, domain-specific languages, and programming styles.

Artificial Intelligence Module

The Artificial Intelligence module includes three courses teaching students techniques and tools to design and model data, use machine learning for software engineering, and use AI for software testing and natural language processing for software engineering.

Electives Module

The Electives module includes 18 ECTS that the student can freely select from a given list of courses offered at the USI Faculty of Informatics based on their personal preference.

Master Thesis

The remaining 36 ECTS are dedicated to the Master thesis. Students will use the 6 ECTS of the 3rd semester to visit the research groups of the Software Institute of the Faculty of Informatics and to prepare a thesis proposal. Then, they will work full time on the thesis in the 4th semester in the research group of their choice.

Admission Criteria

The formal requirement for admission to the Master in Software Engineering with AI is the completion of a Bachelor's degree granted by a recognized university in the field of Computer sciences or related disciplines.

Language Requirements

Admission to English-language Master's programmes at USI requires a good command of English. Applicants whose previous degree was obtained in a language other than English are required to provide an internationally recognized language certificate at the B2+ level.

Tuition Fees

The Bachelor (undergraduate) and Master (graduate) programs at the Universitŕ della Svizzera italiana require a semester fee of CHF 4,000. For students with legal residence in Switzerland or Liechtenstein at the time of obtaining their secondary school diploma, the semester fee is set at CHF 2,000.

Application Procedure

Candidates are invited to submit their application using the online form available on the page. The application deadline for the Autumn intake is 30 April for international (non-EU/EFTA) candidates and 30 June for Swiss and European (EU/EFTA) candidates who do not require a visa.

• Do you offer these degrees as part-time studies as well? All our Master's programmes are full time, attendance to interactive teaching activities included in the curriculum is mandatory.
• Is it possible to work besides studying? The residence permit for study purposes does not grant students automatic entitlement to paid employment.
• Do you offer distance learning/e-learning programmes or is there any way to allow me to enroll without attending full time? All our Master programmes are full time and taught on campus.
• Are the degrees issued by USI recognised internationally? Universitŕ della Svizzera italiana (USI) is a recognised or accredited Swiss university.
