The Master of Public Health in Global Health (MPH) course at Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo) is designed to advance students' knowledge and skills in the core public health disciplines while preparing them to generate, translate, and disseminate public-health-related knowledge in real-world contexts.

Curriculum Overview

The MPH course is designed to provide students with a conceptual grounding in theoretical approaches to health behavior change, as well as practical skills in research design, data collection, and analysis. The course consists of two years of study, with the first year focusing on in-class coursework and the second year focusing on original public health research and the completion of a master's thesis.

Program Components

• 1st year: In-class coursework at the Tokyo campus
• 2nd year: Original public health research and completion of a master's thesis (Tokyo campus or online)
• Optional: Internship at an international organization

Teaching Methods

Both core and elective courses will be conducted using lecture-based and active, case-based learning approaches. Throughout the course, students will have ample opportunity to apply theories learned in lecture-based classes to realistic situations using case-based discussion.

Academic Advisor

Each student will be assigned a Science Tokyo-MPH course faculty member to be their academic advisor. The role of the academic advisor is to provide students with academic guidance, information, and supervision of their research project.

Research and Thesis

The research and thesis component of the MPH course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to conduct original research in a public health setting. Students will work with their academic advisor to design and conduct a research project, and will be required to submit a thesis at the end of the second year.

Thesis Defense Schedule

The thesis defense schedule is as follows:

• March graduates: Submission of application documents in January, submission of thesis in February, defense and final examination in March
• September graduates: Submission of application documents in July, submission of thesis in August, defense and final examination in September

Who Should Apply

The MPH course welcomes individuals with a bachelor's or higher degree who wish to pursue a career in public health academia or become a public health officer at international organizations.

The enrollment schedule is as follows:

• Spring admission: Online application period in October, documents submission period in October, interview in November, announcement of successful applicants in December
• Autumn admission: Online application period in April, documents submission period in April, interview in May, announcement of successful applicants in June
