Online Transition to Teaching Program for Early Childhood Education

The Early Childhood Transition to Teaching program certifies students who have degrees in other majors to teach in early childhood or kindergarten/primary classroom settings. By completing the program and passing state-mandated licensing tests, students will be qualified to teach elementary children with an Indiana teaching license in preK - 3rd grade.

Program Details

T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship

If you live and work in Indiana, you may qualify for the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Indiana scholarship that can cover most of your tuition and book costs.

Transition to Teaching Scholarship

A Transition to Teaching Scholarship is available to students interested in pursuing a career in education. This is a need-based, one-time, non-renewable scholarship of up to $10,000.

• Eligibility Requirements: In exchange for the Transition to Teaching Scholarship, recipients must commit to teaching for five years at an eligible Indiana school.

On Your Way to a Master's Degree

When you finish the transition program, you'll need only a few additional courses to complete a master's in elementary education with a concentration in early childhood education.

Course Requirements

You will complete two courses each semester with a cohort group of your peers. The program has a set plan that follows a four-semester format. Your academic advisor will help you with scheduling.

• ECYF 640 – Early Childhood Education (3 credits)
• ECYF 646 – Integrated Curriculum in Early Childhood Education (3 credits)
• ECYF 648 – Play and Creativity in Early Childhood (3 credits)
• ECYF 690 – Student Teaching (6 credits)
• EDRD 610 – Teaching of Literacy in the Elementary School (3 credits)
• EDRD 615 – Early Literacy Development (3 credits)
• EDPS 627 – Child Development (3 credits)

Admission and Start Date

At this time, students can only start the Early Childhood Transition to Teaching program in the Fall semesters. Be sure to review the admission requirements and application materials, and apply by July 1. The next start date is August 24, 2026.
