Introduction to Marist University's Summer Pre-College Program
Marist University is a highly selective and comprehensive institution noted for its leadership in combining a liberal arts foundation with a professional education. The university offers a Summer Pre-College Program in Fashion Design, providing students with an opportunity to experience the exciting elements of fashion design and cultivate their fashion sketching skills while experiencing college life.
Program Details
The Marist Summer Pre-College Program in Fashion Design Portfolio Development is a two-week course that allows students to fully explore the process of designing a collection of apparel culminating in a portfolio presentation. The program focuses on apparel design portfolio development, teaching students the elements of basic fashion design sketching and helping them develop a portfolio of their own.
Learning Outcomes
The overall learning goal of this course is to explore the various aspects of fashion design portfolio development. In this course, students will:
- Gain an understanding of the process of designing a capsule apparel collection
- Learn advanced figure drawing techniques
- Develop garment and specification flats rendering techniques
- Acquire an understanding of garment details, silhouettes, and construction
- Gain an understanding of presentation techniques as they apply to fashion design
- Develop process projects that will culminate in a completed fashion capsule collection portfolio
Program Structure
The program is geared toward sophomores and juniors in high school. Upon successful completion of the Fashion Design Portfolio Development SPC Program, each student will earn three (3) transferable college credits for the Marist course, FASH 105N.

The cost includes:

- Most course materials The cost does not include travel expenses. Students may wish to bring funds for incidentals, shopping at the Marist Bookstore or the local mall, souvenirs, and any personal items they wish to purchase. Students should bring a laptop for their coursework. The Fashion Design (Portfolio) Program Cost is $3,700.
About the Program
The program allows students to experience Marist's Maker Lab, utilize the Fashion Department's Creative Resource Center, and attend two field trips, including one into NYC. The focus of the program is on developing a fashion design portfolio, with students learning how to develop their design ideas in fashion sketches by understanding garment details, silhouettes, construction of garments, and rendering techniques. Students will develop and refine their presentation skills as they progress towards the ultimate goal of a fully finished portfolio collection.
