Introduction to the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP)

The CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) is an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program designed for entering freshmen who have already been admitted to a CUNY college and need additional ESL classes prior to entering college. The program is also suitable for students who have not been successful in their college ESL courses.


Program Details

  • The program consists of 25 hours of instruction per week.
  • Classes are held 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday, with both day and evening schedules available:
    • Day: 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
    • Evening: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • The program focuses on preparing students for college by developing their reading, writing, and oral communication skills, as well as critical thinking, analytical skills, and study skills.
  • Students have access to a computer lab for writing essays, internet research, and improving reading, grammar, vocabulary, and listening skills.
  • The program offers individual attention with small class sizes and advisors available to assist students.

Eligibility and Registration

Eligibility Status

  • Freshmen: Only students admitted to a CUNY college are eligible. They must provide a letter of acceptance, identification card, and any CUNY Placement scores.
  • Matriculated Students: Must be referred by a faculty member or academic advisor. Students from other colleges must bring a referral letter and transcript.
  • Students from senior colleges: Those dismissed or freshmen not meeting entrance criteria may be accepted.

Registration Process

  1. Fill out an application and questionnaire with the CLIP Office.
  2. Attend an orientation session.
  3. Take the CLIP Placement tests.
  4. Pay the program fee at the Bursar's office and email the receipt to the CLIP office.
  5. Receive class assignment and instructor information via email.

Schedule and Fees

  • Class Schedule:
    • Day classes: 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
    • Evening classes: 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
  • Semesters:
    • Spring: Typically starts in January and ends in June.
    • Summer: Typically starts in June and ends in August.
  • Fees:
    • Spring/Fall:
      • $180 for students with one year New York State residency.
      • $450 for students with less than one year residency.
      • $45 for College Discovery/SEEK students and public assistance recipients.
    • Summer:
      • $75 for students with one year New York State residency.
      • $180 for students with less than one year residency.
      • $18 for College Discovery/SEEK students and public assistance recipients.
