Clinical Medicine Program

The Clinical Medicine program at AUIS is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in patient care, honing their clinical skills through preceptor-supervised patient contact in both inpatient and outpatient care settings. This experience enhances students' proficiency in medical history taking, conducting physical diagnostic examinations, understanding practice guidelines, and developing inter-professional relationships and leadership skills.

Clinical Training Model

The clinical training model at AUIS enables students to become physicians through advanced clinical courses. The program is well-organized, professionally maintained, and has availability for every student admitted. As the number of students grows, the clinical rotation opportunities expand to accommodate them.

Advanced Clinical Medicine

The Advanced Clinical Medicine (ACM) course, formerly known as the Step 2 Clinical Skills & Procedures Course, is designed to give students an edge during exams. The course focuses on helping students build on their medical knowledge, clinical skills, and bedside manner to create a complete physician package.

Course Details

• The course is led by AUIS Provost & Clinical Dean, Dr. Don Penney, MD, MSC, FACEP.
• Instructors are specialists in their fields, including neurosurgeons, pulmonologists, intensivists, rheumatologists, and orthopedic surgeons.
• The course uses standardized patients to provide examples of clinical practice.
• Intended outcomes include assessment and documentation of proper history taking and physical examination techniques, qualifying students for Step 2 CS success.

Eligibility and Cost

• The course is offered to active AUIS School of Medicine students and a limited number of MD Year 3 and 4 students from other institutions.
• For AUIS students, the course cost is 4 weeks of AUIS clerkship tuition.
• For students outside of AUIS, the course cost is 4 weeks of clinical rotation fees.

Residency

The goal of the Clinical Medicine program is to prepare students for residency in the United States or Canada. AUIS has a track record of producing physicians who match on the first attempt, with 71% of eligible students succeeding in 2019.

Core Rotations

Core rotations are localized to Atlanta, Michigan, and Arizona, optimizing students' ability to network and get to know the physician community, paving the way for future opportunities. This allows students to learn about programs they may apply to during residency and often work with AUIS alumni.
