Introduction to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Alma College offers a well-rounded curriculum that blends foundational nursing education with real-world application. Students begin with core courses in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, building a strong knowledge base for advanced nursing concepts.

Program Overview

In Alma's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), students build a cross-disciplinary foundation in the sciences and humanities. Then, they put their expertise to the test through hands-on learning and clinical placements. The program emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, ensuring that students not only understand the science of nursing but can also apply it effectively in real-world scenarios.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the BSN program includes:

• Professional Sequence (50 credits): NUR-102, 220, 302, 310, 350, 351, 360, 452, 453, 454, 455, 482, and 500.
• Integrative Science Core (42 credits): BIO-121 or IPH-131; BIO-308; CHM-115; IPH-231, 232, 301, 310 or 311, 328, and 340 or 341*; PSY-120 and 331.
• Required Cognates (8 credits):
  • Four credits from: MTH-116, IPH-230 or PSY-220;
  • Four credits from: PHL-103, 126, 229, 240 or BIO-210.

Admission Requirements

First-year students interested in Nursing must register as Pre-Nursing during registration for their first semester. In the Fall of the sophomore year, pre-nursing students will apply for admission to the Nursing program. Admission requirements include:

• Minimum GPA of 2.5.
• A C or higher in all courses noted with *.
• Minimum grade of 3.0 in NUR 102
• Each nursing cohort is limited to 32 students. If further selection is required, academic success in IPH 131/BIO 121, CHM 115, and IPH 231 will be considered.

Additional Program Requirements

• All nursing students must maintain a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in nursing (NUR) courses.
• All nursing students must earn a minimum grade of BC in every nursing (NUR) course to progress in the program.
• Any nursing student earning a C or below in a nursing course (NUR) must repeat the course to remain in the program and progress. The student may continue to take courses in the same tier while waiting to repeat the course.
• A student may repeat only one nursing course (NUR) and may repeat a nursing course only one time. If a student fails to achieve a grade of BC or above in a second NUR course, or a grade of BC or above in a repeated nursing course, the student will not be allowed to remain in the Alma College nursing program.
